The World Health Organization declared the outbreak of COVID-19 a Public Health Emergency of International Concern on 30 January 2020 and a pandemic on 11 March 2020. The virus is typically spread during close contact, via respiratory droplets produced when people cough or sneeze, and when one touches a contaminated surface. The virus can live on surfaces up to 72 hours. The Australian Department of Health ‘Environmental cleaning and disinfection principles for COVID-19’ recommend disinfecting public surfaces.
